More than 200,000 reprinted ballot papers for the 2025 Local Government Election, covering 102 local councils, are scheduled to be finalised and fully handed over to the Election Commission (EC) today, April 20, according to Government Printer Pradeep Pushpakumara.
Mr. Pushpakumara informed the Sunday Times that the ballot papers were initially printed and delivered to the EC on April 6. However, subsequent court decisions overturning rejected nominations necessitated the reprinting of the ballot papers for 102 local councils, totaling over 200,000 papers.
He explained that the process of redesigning the layouts for each of the 102 councils was not an easy task, but it was made more manageable through the dedicated support of the Election Commission. With the combined efforts, all revised ballot papers are scheduled to be handed over to the EC by April 20, 2025, and the standard poll cards and other documents by April 30, 2025, said Mr. Pushpakumara to the Sunday Times.
He further stated “However, according to the court decision other standard poll cards are also to be reprinted in 71 Local Councils totalling 4,129,150 papers”. According to Mr. Pushpakumara the total cost of reprinting documents will be over approximately 46 lakhs and the extra cost for the reprinting process will be over 120 million.
However, the scheduled postal voting dates were revised by the Election Commission and according to the updated schedule, postal voting will now take place on April 24, 25, 28, and 29.
When the Sunday Times asked about the printing and distribution process of the poll cards related to the Local Council Election, Mr. R.M.A.L. Rathnayaka stated that approximately two-thirds of the postal ballots had already been distributed, and the remaining ballot papers would be distributed on April 21, 2025.
Mr. Rathnayake further explained that finally the election is scheduled to take place across all 339 councils in the country on May 6, 2025. However, if there are any changes following the upcoming court date on April 21, the election in those councils may have to be postponed, as there would not be enough time to revise and reprint the ballot papers.
