Bid to remove Deshabandu: Probe committee appointment finalised

Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne is expected to finalise the appointment of the Committee of Inquiry (CoI) tasked with probing the charges against suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon in the next few days.
A resolution calling for the appointment of a CoI to remove Mr. Tennakoon from his post for misconduct and gross abuse of power was passed in Parliament on April 8. The three-member CoI that is to be appointed in line with the resolution will be headed by a Supreme Court Justice recommended by the Chief Justice. The Sunday Times understands that in response to the notification sent by Parliament following the passage of the resolution, Chief Justice Murdu Fernando has recommended the name of a senior Supreme Court Justice to head the Committee.
National Police Commission (NPC) Chairman, former High Court Judge Lalith Ekanayake will be a member of the CoI given the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act, No. 5 of 2002 stipulates that the Chairman of the NPC must be a member of the Committee. The third member of the Committee must be a person who has reached eminence in the field of law or management of public administration, appointed by the Speaker with the concurrence of the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
