Drunk-driving and falling asleep on the wheel claim many lives during Avurudu

Drunk driving along with drivers falling asleep on the wheel resulted in a string of accidents during the
New Year season.

At least 105 persons were killed while scores of others were injured in road accidents.

Even though this year’s statistics show a slight drop in accidents compared to last year, many fatal and nonfatal accidents have been reported this week as well.

Some accidents were recorded on April 14, New Year’s day. One such accident occurred in the evening hours in Wellamorana area at Mihintale, where a cab which were travelling from Galkuulama towards Mihintale, had veered off the road and hit a culvert.

The driver of the cab had died instantly, while the other passenger who was first admitted to Mihintale hospital and then transferred to Anuradhapura hospital succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased were identified as 25 and 37 year old residents of Anuradhapura and Palugaswewa areas.

In a separate incident on Tuesday April 15, two people were killed after a cab collided with a three wheeler on the Kurunegala – Dambulla road near the northern depot
at Kurunegala.

The incident occurred when a cab travelling from Dambulla to Kurunegala was involved in a head on collision with a three wheeler and a motorbike travelling from the opposite side.

The accident caused injuries to the three wheel driver, two passengers in the three wheel and the motorbike rider. The three wheel driver and one of the passengers of three wheel however died on admission to Kurunegala hospital.

The deceased were identified as residents of Galkiriyagama area. Meanwhile the owner of the cab was arrested. Police said that the cab driver had driven the vehicle under the influence of liquor.
