Tour de historic Bogambara prison: People left in the dark
View(s):Story and Pix Chandani Kirinde
The once notorious Bogambara Prison located in the Kandy city which is now open to the public is in dire need of restoration and development so that visitors to the historic building can experience a bit of the country’s history in a meaningful manner.
The building and premise which comes under the purview of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) can be accessed by the public after buying a ticket at a nominal rate at the gate but what one has to undertake is a self-guided tour within the building with little information on the history of the place.
The Bogambara maximum security Prison was opened in 1876. It was built on the instructions of the British colonial government and the Inspector General of Prisons and Police at the time N. R. Saunders and housed many prisoners on death row.
This prison is said to have been modelled on the French medieval fortress, The Bastille.
Several attempts have been made in the past to develop the valuable property in the centre of Kandy, but the archaeological site remains neglected and in need of urgent attention of the relevant authorities.
