Colombo High Court Judge Sanjeewa Nissanka ordered that the examination of evidence against eight accused, indicted over the X-Press Pearl disaster, can resume on May 15. The case had been held up due to a preliminary objection.

The judge gave the order after considering a motion filed by Solicitor General Madawa Tennakoon, appearing for the Attorney General. Accordingly, the judge ordered Colombo Port’s Harbour Master Captain Nirmal Silva to appear in court on May 15 to testify for the prosecution.

Attorney-at-Law Nipuna Wimalasekara, who appeared for the first accused, X-Press Pearl’s Russian Captain Vitaly Tyutkalo, informed court that his client needed to extend his visa to stay in the country. Having considered the request, the court ordered accused’s passport, which was in the custody of the court, to be released so that his visa can be extended. He was ordered to hand over the passport to court’s custody once his visa was extended.
