New federation for app-based drivers

A new organisation called the Federation of App-based Transport Workers was formed on Friday under the aegis of the Sri Lanka office of the UK-based International Transport Workers Federation (ITF).

The grouping brought together various associations representing app-based drivers working for PickMe, Uber and other app-based associations. “We are joining together to provide a bigger voice for these workers,” said Charith Attanapola, Convenor of the new federation.

Asked about recent clashes between app-based drivers and location-based taxi and tuktuk drivers particularly in popular tourist areas, he said one of the ways of resolving these issues is for the government to bring in some regulations to formalise these different units.

Palitha Athukorala, Secretary of ITF’s Sri Lanka office, said they planned to hold a joint May Day rally bringing in all these groups.
