APIIT Law School, Colombo Marks a Milestone with the Launch of the Inaugural Inter-University Debating Championship 2025
View(s):APIIT Law School, Colombo, reached a significant milestone in its mission to “Inspire Love for Learning” with the successful launch of the inaugural Inter-University Debating Championship (IUDC) 2025. The two-day tournament, held on the 22nd and 23rd of March 2025, was organised by the Moot, Debate, and Mock Mediation Society (MDMMS) of APIIT Law School and brought together 32 teams from public and private sector universities across Sri Lanka for an intellectually stimulating competition.
The championship was officially endorsed by the Debaters’ Council of Sri Lanka, with Chief Adjudicator Mr Naika Gooneratne playing a pivotal role in curating high-calibre British Parliamentary-style motions.
The event commenced with four preliminary rounds on the 22nd of March, followed by the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and the Grand Finale on the 23rd of March. A standout feature of the first day was the Trivia Night hosted by the Organising Committee – an evening filled with music, food, and light-hearted conversation, which fostered camaraderie among participants and adjudicators alike.
Throughout the championship, teams demonstrated remarkable resilience, critical thinking, and eloquence. With a panel of seasoned adjudicators from the Debaters’ Council ensuring impartial and insightful evaluations, each round evolved into a true contest of intellect.
The Grand Finale featured four exceptional teams: Suchith Tissera and Gavin Senaratne representing the University of Moratuwa; Daniel Victor and Imaadh Iftikhar representing the University of Peradeniya; Shakeeb Mohideen and Jayageeth Basnayake from the Royal Institute of Colombo; and a cross-institutional team comprising Thithira Jayakody (University of Cambridge) and Afrah Athahuraman (University of Durham).
In a gripping final round, the team from the University of Moratuwa—Suchith Tissera and Gavin Senaratne—emerged as the Champions of IUDC 2025. The Runners-Up title was awarded to Thithira Jayakody and Afrah Athahuraman, while the Best Speaker Award was presented to Gavin Senaratne in recognition of his exceptional oratory and debating skills.
The closing ceremony was graced by the Chief Guest, President’s Counsel and Additional Solicitor General, Ms. Viveka Siriwardena. The event was further dignified by the presence of Mr Bandula Egodage, Chairman of APIIT Sri Lanka, as Guest of Honour, alongside Dr Chathura Warnasuriya, Head of APIIT Law School.
