View(s):

The Department of Legal Studies at NSBM Green University proudly hosted its first-ever Students’ Legal Research Symposium—SLRS 25—on 28th March 2025. This landmark event, held in celebration of the department’s 4th anniversary, was themed ‘Legal Landscape for the 2nd Quarter’, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to contemporary legal challenges.

In the ever-evolving legal domain, research is the cornerstone of intellectual growth, honing critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and argument formulation—skills indispensable to aspiring legal professionals. While technology has made information more accessible, the depth and rigor of legal research are irreplaceable. Recognizing this, the symposium was meticulously designed to provide students with hands-on experience in academic research, guiding them through the process of selecting compelling topics, defining research problems, applying sound methodologies, and producing high-quality papers.

Having been introduced to research techniques in their first year, students were encouraged to translate their knowledge into practice. A series of preparatory workshops enabled them to refine their ideas, culminating in 18 outstanding research papers, each reflecting keen insight and scholarly dedication.

The symposium was a full-day event, commencing with an inaugural session that featured two distinguished keynote speakers. Mr. K.G.P. Sirikumara, Assistant Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, delivered an insightful address on “Financial Regulation in a Changing World: The Role of Law in Crisis Management and Economic Resilience.” Adding to the discourse, Dr. U.T.A. Udayanganie from the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, provided a thought-provoking perspective on “The Future of Human Rights in a Digital World.”

The research presentations were conducted in two parallel sessions, with expert panelists—including the keynote speakers, internal faculty members and esteemed legal practitioners, Ms. Elisha Fernando and Mr. Mevan Nanayakkara—offering invaluable critiques and professional insights. Recognising excellence, awards were presented to the best paper and best presenter from each session, an achievement celebrated by participants and faculty alike.

The event underscored NSBM Green University’s unwavering commitment to fostering a robust research culture, reinforcing its reputation as a leading institution in legal education. As a state university offering two prestigious LL.B (Hons) degree programmes—one approved by the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka, and the other in collaboration with the University of Plymouth, UK—NSBM provides an unparalleled academic experience. With a world-class campus in Pitipana, the university continues to inspire and empower the next generation of legal professionals, shaping the future of law through scholarship and innovation.

For those aspiring to be part of a dynamic legal academic community, NSBM Green University is the gateway to excellence.
