The University of Vavuniya and the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) which signed an MoU in 2023 for capacity building are continuing the programme in 2025. The programme was intended for one year, but it has been extended for two years.

The MoU involves the Vavuniya University training the MAG staff in English, IT and soft skill development, Prof Yogarajah Nanthagopan the Dean of the Faculty of the Business Studies said.

“The MoU provides training for MAG staff members who are part of the demining programme within the fields of IT, English language training and soft skill development and once finished with the programme the attendees can find future employment.”

According to the Dean, the English Language training programme would help the MAG students in communication and enable them to converse with all people.

Prof Nanthagopan also said that the English Language training course is to instruct students in basic reading, listening and writing and would be facilitated with audio labs at the university premises on Saturday and Sundays.

The IT development is to provide students with basic IT requirements such as in MS Office software, writing emails and other fundamentals like computer hardware. This too is to be conducted in university labs and university lecture halls.

In the meantime, soft skill development is intended to develop the staff members’ capacity in leadership development, team building, emotional intelligence, communication skills, and problem solving. This programme lasted over 10 days and was carried out in five phases.

Subsequently, the Personal Financial Management Training Programme was delivered in four phases over 12 days.

The Prof also explained that the MAG will do basic assessment to understand the level of complexity of their students undergoing the training. He added that the information provided will allow the university to understand what training should be provided for each group.

In addition, with the support of MAG, a study was conducted in the Northern and Eastern parts of the island to understand the market driven employability skills, training opportunities and key challengers and roles of entrepreneurs. The study involved direct observation and discussions that resulted in a report on the soft skills needed by entrepreneurs in the region.

The Dean also said that 15 staff members assisted with the programme and that the MoU would only cover capacity building and would not involve any other improvements.  (PW)
