The officials attached to the Kandakuliya Wildlife range office released to the sea 400 baby sea turtles hatched at turtle hatcheries in the area.

The Wildlife officers released the turtles at the Kudawa beach, situated at Kandakuliya. Under the supervision of the officials the baby olive ridley turtles, known as “Batu Kesbewa”, had been hatched out after a 45-to-50-day incubation period.

Both locals and foreign tourists visited the beach to witness the release.

Wildlife Ranger Upali Kumaratunga said that the female olive ridley turtles lay eggs at the Northwestern coastal areas, yet the officials of the Department of   Wildlife Conservation attached to offices in the areas have to exert great effort to preserve the eggs and improve the numbers of
turtles.

He explained the biggest challenges the turtles face come from humans, as some people secretly kill and consume the meat of adult turtles and also consume turtle eggs.
