Gloomy skies and rain despite warm spells, Met. Department says

The weather in most parts of the country is expected to be mostly cloudy with a chance of passing showers and thunderstorms, Meteorological Department’s Director Athula Karunanayake said.
This is mainly due to the fact that the Intertropical Convergence Zone significantly impacts the weather, primarily causing increased cloudiness and precipitation in areas.
The Intertropical Convergence Zone is a zone where winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres converge.
When compared to other parts of the country in these areas the humidity level is comparatively low.

During mornings heavy showers can be expected in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely at some places in these areas.
During daytime, heat will prevail but due to the considerable amount of rainfall the heat will be felt on an average level.
In the evenings rainfall can be expected exceeding 75 mm. mainly in Central Province and Uva, and Batticaloa and Ampara districts.
The Intertropical Convergence Zone significantly influences Sri Lanka’s weather, especially during the rainy seasons.
It impacts the frequency and intensity of rainfall, leading to showers and thundershowers across the island. Heavy rainfall, potentially exceeding 100 mm in some areas, is also possible.
However, during the week a warm weather advisory was issued for Eastern and North Central provinces and Monaragala, Hambantota, Jaffna, Kilinochchi to Mullaitivu districts.
Despite the warm weather conditions in Colombo, recently a massive tree was brought down at the D.S. Kanatta Roundabout in Borella by strong winds.
