President to take part in UN Vesak celebrations in Viet Nam
View(s):President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is to undertake an official visit to Viet Nam early next month to attend the 20th United Nations Day of Vesak.
The main theme for this year’s UN Day of Vesak will be “Unity and Inclusivity for Human Dignity: Buddhist Insights for World Peace and Sustainable Development”.
The UN Vesak celebrations will be held in Ho Chi Minh City from May 6 to 8. About 2,700 delegates are expected to attend, including 1,250 international guests from 85 countries and territories.
Aside from Sri Lanka, high-level delegations are also expected from countries such as India, Nepal, Laos, and Cambodia.
While in Vietnam, President Dissanayake is also expected to view the special Buddha relics that will be brought from Saranath’s Mulaghandha Kuty Vihara built by Anagarika Dharmapala. The relics, in the custody of the Maha Bodhi Society of India, are being taken to Vietnam for the first time and will be exhibited around the country for a week. The Vietnam government made a request for these relics through the government of India.
The UN International Vesak Day was proposed by former Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and adopted in 1999.
This year is also significant for Sri Lanka-Vietnam relations since it marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of Sri Lanka-Vietnam diplomatic ties.
