A three-member High Court Trial-at-Bar headed by Judge Mahesh Weeraman has been appointed to hear the case against 12 accused, including former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, over the importation of allegedly counterfeit human immunoglobulin that was then distributed to hospitals.
The two other judges who will be joining Judge Weeraman on the bench are Sampath Abeyratne and Amali Ranaweera. Chief Justice Murdu Fernando appointed the bench on a request by Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe.
Former Minister Rambukwella is accused of aiding and abetting the alleged fraud.
A total of 14 indictments are to be filed against the accused, including causing loss to the government by conspiracy to import substandard human immunoglobulin and rituximab, a cancer prevention drug.
Others accused in the case include the businessman who allegedly imported the injections, a former secretary to the Health Ministry and several other health ministry officials.
