Himal, Mathisan steer St. Joseph Vaz to victory

St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa bowling pair, Himal Ravihansa and Mathisan Fernando, shone in the side’s convincing 10-wicket win over traditional rivals St. Anthony’s College, Wattala in the 2nd Battle of the Golden Blues big match encounter concluded at P. Sara Oval yesterday.

The pair accounted for 17 wickets between them as Himal ended with a match bag of 11 for 88 and Mathisan claiming 6 for 24. The outcome was visible when play ended on day one with the Vazians bundling out the Antonians for a low score of 79 and ending the day on 89-5.

The second day’s play saw the Vazians going on to make 123 runs. The Antonians, batting the second time, succumbed again to Himal, who bagged six wickets and Mathisan taking three scalps, as they were bowled out for another low score of 89 runs. This left the Vazians an easy target of 46 runs, which they achieved with minimum fuss in the eighth over to record the first outright win of the series.
