Sri Lanka take series lead with convincing win over Bangladesh
Sri Lanka Under-19 cricket team recorded a convincing 98-run win over the visiting Bangladesh Under-19s in the first of the six Youth ODI matches played at the CCC ground yesterday, to take a 1-0 lead. The foundation for the win was laid by skipper Senuja Wakunugoda, Chamika Heenitigala and Kavija Gamage, who cracked half tons to help Sri Lanka U-19s taking first lease of the wicket to make a modest score of 241-6.
Sri Lanka U-19s, at one stage, was struggling with their top five batsmen back in the pavilion with the score on 90 in the 26th over before unbeaten half tons by Chamika, who cracked 78 in 92 inclusive of four boundaries, and Kavija, who made 60 in 59 balls with two boundaries and three sixes, rescued the hosts. They associated in an unbroken stand of 127 runs for the sixth wicket.
Bangladesh U-19s, in their run chase, too underwent the same fate as they lost their top five wickets with the score on 90 with spinner Vigneshwaran Akash claiming a five-wicket haul and causing the damage. They never recovered from there on, as they lost wickets at regular intervals as spin trio Akash, Kugadas Mathulan and Kithma Vidanapathirana ran through the lower batting order to bundle them out for a paltry 143 runs. The second Youth ODI at Sooriyawewa tomorrow.
