"Flower arranging has been my hobby for many years" says Mary Jayaratne. "I love flowers and I love to potter around in my rose garden." Mary's husband Bhatiya is a planter on an upcountry estate, so she has the opportunity of living among all those beautiful flowers.
It was her love for flowers that first got her started on the bridal business doing her fresh flower arrangements. For many years she did flower decor for halls and churches, all for relatives and friends. Later with the expertise she gained, she began to develop her talents into a business. At this stage being in London in '82,Mary went to the Constance Spry Flower School and learnt the method of making bouquets, head-dresses, corsages and everything to do with bridal work.
One interesting event she remembers was when her sister's daughter got married three years ago in Durban, South Africa. She took a whole box of assorted Orchids from Sri Lanka to do the bouquets and decor for the Church and the Reception.
10 years ago in '87 Mary participated at the Hilton Bridal Fair. That was her first break into the flower world. Now Mary Jayaratne is much sought after . "My bouquets are light and easy to carry. This is the Constance Spry method of arrangement," said Mary. "It takes me just an hour to assemble the arrangement after I have got every thing ready to be placed into it. "Mary always uses fresh flowers for her arrangements.
Mary is a lover of wild life and one of her hobbies is bird watching and living on an Estate from time to time she gets many opportunities to follow her interest.
