Black Meets White

ImageThe dramatic contrast of black and white makes an exceptionally stylish decorating solution. A room painted in black and white always has a strong, distinctive identity, but it need not appear stark or comfortless. The overall mood depends on the shape and size of the room itself and the balance of tones throughout; this can be varied in subtle ways according to the function of the room and the details of furnishings, ornaments and other objects which it contains.

To make the most of an open, light space, choose clean white walls framed by glossy black paintwork. Both elements capitalize on the available light and respond to the addition of warm or cool colours as a balancing factor. Black makes a virtue of an enclosed or restricted space, such as a bathroom or small den, emphasizing its privacy and lending itself to decorative touches, of colour and detail in curtains, cushions, pretty lamps and other accessories.

The neutrality of black and white can be exploited by the addition of bright, primary colours, cool, subtle blues and greys or the warm brown tones of natural wood, cane and similar materials. In fact, this is an endlessly versatile colour choice, adaptable to both traditional and modern furnishing styles.
