The war continued. Operation Jaya Sikurui advances towards clearing the land route to Jaffna. On the war front also, setbacks were many. A camp at Paranthan was attacked early this year, aircraft crashed to the ground at intervals, A fierce battle early this month at Omanthai resulted in large loss of life, many were well-trained Commandos. |

Meanwhile thousands of refugees from Jaffna who fled their homes when
Jaffna was taken back by the forces, returned to the peninsula. In fresh
spurt of terrorist violence in the south, several Yala National Park bungalows
were burnt down and the bus depot at Kataragama was attacked by armed youth,
killing a security guard and leaving some 20 busses in cinders.
