Mubarak catapults Royal to victory

Reports from Bernie Wijesekera, Saif Izzadeen, S.M.D. Sirisena and Annesly Ferreira

In a tense schools cricket match at Reid Avenue, Royal set to make 13 runs for a win in three overs, scored a convincing ten wickets win over Prince of Wales when all-rounders Jehan Mubarak and Umish Gunawardena hit the required runs with four balls to spare yesterday.

This was Royal's first win for the season and they deserved to win as they dominated play in both days with a spirited team effort. The players stood out in this match - all rounders Jehan Mubarak and Thushan Amarasuriya . The pair put on 99 runs for the third wicket. Amarasuriya making a come back to the team, after an injury, stroked a determined 66 while Mubarak, who has been batting consistently well this season, was unfortunate to be out for 92. In his stroke filled innings he had ten fours.

The Cambrians in the first innings ran into a storm against Umesh Gunawardena and were bundled out for 125 runs. He picked up 4 for 25. Royal yesterday declared at 301 for eight at 10.55 am. The Cambrian openers batting with assurance were 52 for 1 at lunch. Indunil Hiththatiya stroked a bright 36 (with four fours). At one stage they were struggling when theit middle order batting fell on the wayside facing a deficit of 176 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

But the visitors fought back, thanks to a fine rear-guard action by their ninth wicket pair, who kept the Royal bowlers in check even with the introduction of the second new ball. Sanjeewa Pieris (8) was unfortunate to be caught at forward short-leg by Harith Rajakaruna after a defiant ninth-wicket stand of 25 runs, with Thushara Silva, who batted doggedly for 27 runs.

The Cambrians were all out for 188 runs, leaving Royal with 13 runs for victory. There was a controversy over the number of overs left for Royal to make the required runs. But according to the umpires, when the mandatory overs are in progress, an over has to be completed, to be counted as an over. Royal only bowled 3 balls in the 15th over, and had the benefit of playing an extra over. Mubarak, the batsman in-form, hammered 12 runs with 2 fours, to give a right Royal victory, with four balls to spare.

Prince of Wales 125 and 188 all out in 79.4 overs (I. Hiththatiya 36, K. Fernando 18, C. Sampath 34, N. Ratnayake 11, J. Wannakuwatte 16, D. Perera 18, T. Silva 17, S. Udumalagala 2/28, S. Perera 3/8, J. Mubarak 3/26).

Royal (227/4 overnight), 301/8 dec. in 74.4 overs (T. Amarasuriya 66, J. Mubarak 92, R. Jayasuriya 38, L. Liyanage 29, H. Fernando 2/102, K. Fernando 2/47, and S. Peiris 2/49) and 13 for no loss in 2.2 overs (J. Mubarak 12 n.o).

Ganegama (7/57) shines as Ananda win.

A deadly spell of right arm fast bowling by Akalanka Ganegama, who had 7 for 57 helped Ananda to record their fifth win for the season, as they scored a crushing ten wickets win over St.Benedict's in an inter school cricket match at Kotahena yesterday.

St. Benedict's batting a second time, with a deficit of 82 runs, were rocked by a hostile spell of fast bowling by Ganegama, who ripped through the St. Benedict's batting line up, to have them reeling at 18 for 5, with his first spell reading 8-0-22-5. St. Benedict's after being at a hopeless 18 for 5 were helped by two face saving partnerships. First it was a 37 runs stand for the sixth wicket between Shine Perera (14) and Calvin Perera (64), which brought the score to 55 for 6.

Then came a 69 runs stand for the seventh wicket between Susith Eranda (32) and Calvin Perera (64), which brought them to 124 for 7. But these two partnerships only delayed the inevitable as Ganegama returned to his second spell and added another two wickets to his tally to have 7 for 57 and bowled out St Benedict's for 145. Calvin Perera made workman like 64. The knock had 11 hits to the ropes.

This left Ananda to score 64 runs in 36 overs to win the match, which they achieved in 16.4 overs, thanks to a first wicket stand of 64 runs between skipper Lahiru Chaturanga (24) and Lakshan Fernando (36), helping them to sail home with another 19.2 overs still remaining. Lakshan Fernando who made 36, saw one of his huge sixes going out of the ground and landing on the Sugathadasa Stadium Car Park.

Early in the day, Ananda continuing from their overnight score of 142 for 4, added another 54 runs to declare their innings at 196 for 8. For Ananda, the main contributions came from Thilina Kandhambi (52) which had seven fours and one six, Sameera Pannapitiya (52) which contained five fours and Mutumudalige Pushpakumara (25),

For the Kotahena school Asiri Gunatillake (4 for 54) and Shine Perera (3 for 73) bowled well.
