Harry's travails and travels

Even if he was hassled by the PERC over AirLanka matters, Chairman Harry Jayawardena, did not forget to take personal care of perks when it came to the national carrier.

Main among them was free travel for employees, a purely clerical matter handled by a junior supervisory officer.

The Chairman decided he should take over the task. He had to personally approve those wanting to avail themselves of free travel abroad.

Last week, he had to decide on a request. It came from Harry Jayawardena. So Harry Jayawardena approved the request. It was for free travel (first class) to France. He was going along with a three member family entourage. An arrangement was also worked out for free travel in France with a domestic carrier.

The destination - Lourdes. What better place to be than in Lourdes during Easter.

Golf courts

Viewers of ITN watching a live debate between Government and Opposition members were in for some laughter recently.

It came when arguments centred around the proposed multi-million rupee Golf Course in Kotte.

Sports Minister S.B. Dissanayake, went on referring to the project as "Golf Courts."

Just in case it creates a misunderstanding, there are no vacancies for Judges and Magistrates in these "Golf Courts."
