Benzoyl PeroxideA lot of acne preparations contain benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most widely used medications for acne. It is primarily an antibacterial agent, available in over-the -counter products and prescription medications. When applied to the skin, benzoyl peroxide penetrates into the follicles and reduces the population of Propionibacterium acnes, the bacterial organism that plays a role in inflammatory acne. There are some disadvantages to the use of benzoyl peroxide. A few patients may experience mild irritation, and a very small percentage may develop allergic contact dermatitis. Overzealous use may result in excessive dryness. Care must be taken not to get benzoyl peroxide on the hair or on clothing or towels as it may bleach them. Benzoyl peroxide is available in gels, creams, lotions, masks, and cleansers. Most of the gels must be prescribed by a physician. There is also a prescription formulation combining benzoyl peroxide with the antibiotic erythromycin. |
