Gwendoline's magic

By Roshan Peiris

Gwendoline treating one of her clients: beauty is a girl's best friendGwendoline Kuhatheva spends her time working hard to make women look good.

Gwendoline herself is an epitome of good grooming and chic. Dressed in a beige and red cotton Indian saree, her make-up impeccable, she is the best advertisement for her career.

A Director of Studies at Technique International, and a Home Economics teacher for 15 years Gwendoline has many professional affiliations such as being a qualified Aromatherapist U.K., state registered hairdresser U.K, and a member of the British Association of Beauticians and Cosmetologists UK. She also holds a Home Economics Diploma from Lady Irwin College, New Delhi and a certificate from the Morris Master Class of hair dressing to mention only a few and runs her own salon at Colombo 3.

Gwendoline has the knack of making a woman feel good, not only look good. This is very important, says Gwendoline. She speaks animatedly of "non-surgical face lifting" which is one of the most technically advanced and effective non- surgical face-lifting methods available. Other systems have won wide acclaim by merely touching on the problem of facial aging. 'Diana' the new face lifting technique attacks the problem head-on, says Gwendoline.

She lists what Diana can do using the latest super sophisticated micro-technology and what is termed the Diana combination system. "This is designed specifically to raise the forehead, raise the eyebrows, smooth crows feet, smooth the upper eye area, detoxify the lower eye area, lift the cheeks and firm the jaws."

Then there "is 'Nemesis' dedicated to toning the whole body system." This is a complete work out that tackles the hard work of the gym. Nemesis is a good choice,'' says Gwendoline, "because of its digitally controlled balanced wave form and advanced microchip technology."

Then there is special effect make-up for brides - a different make-up for the morning and evening and character make-up for the stage and make-up which takes years off your age.

There is also "body wrapping" which detoxifies the body enabling it to lose inches.

After the body wrapping treatment Gwendoline says, drink plenty of water, either mineral or tap water but not carbonated mineral water-this is not good. "Also try drinking 2 quarts or more per day. This will help you to rid your body of impurities."

Gwendoline has thoughtfully included a phase in her beauty therapy, to " Spoil yourself", something that should appeal to most, if not to every woman bent on looking good.

Here are some of the tips to ''spoil yourself" with. "Make time to be alone with yourself and practise mediation. Indulge your thoughts and moods and get some exercise doing something you enjoy. Eat fresh unprocessed food. Cultivate your friendships by being a good listener."

Perhaps amusing is the advice that "one must give and get enough hugs." This, says Gwendoline "is because touch is very important in relaxation." Otherwise Gwendoline warns, those who never get "touched" are prone to a variety of stress related illnesses."

There is another intriguing facet. Aromatherapy deals with body massages which remove stress and makes one feel good being massaged with aromatherapy oil using it at pressure points. Then there is woman's crowning glory, hair. Gwendoline gives tips on what not to do. Bad brushing,over-back combing, excessive electrical appliances used on the hair, strong sunlight and chlorinated water which dries out the hair. Finally avoid very windy conditions which tangle the hair.

Then there is "Mud Beautiful Mud" Gwendoline says with a twinkle in her eyes. "From Europe to the Middle East women down the ages including the legendary Cleopatra have known the benefit of using mud packs.''

Finally Gwendoline gives sage advice ''don't worry, don't smoke, set aside your worries and get along with living. Nourish your body for a good eating programme, will strengthen your immune response and your ability to cope with stress." Finally Gwendoline says don't forget to get enough sleep and exercise.

"Beauty therapy like diamonds is," she sums up, "a girl's best friend!!"
