Eco
award for Makadawara
S.M.B. Makadawara of the Upper Mahaweli Watershed Management Project,
has been selected as the recipient of the Sustained Contributor Award by
the International Erosion Control Association (IECA) of America. Awards
Committee Chairman Jerald S. Fifield states that Mr. Makadawara's award
entry was considered very special indeed. He states, "Although your
award entry titled 'Uma Oya Catchment Conservation - Sri Lanka-German Upper
Mahaweli Watershed Management Project' was originally submitted in the
Environmental Achievement Award category, the Awards Committee felt the
soil conservation and erosion control efforts you have directed over the
past years are worthy of recognition in the Sustained Contributor category.
"This award is given to the person who has demonstrated a significant
and long-term contribution to the erosion and sediment control profession
through education, government involvement, research or development of technology.
"The positive environmental results that you have achieved through
education of farmers and extension agents, through establishment of vetiver
and grass nurseries, and by increasing awareness of economical ways to
control erosion are to be commended."
He has been invited to attend the opening session of the IECA's 31st
Annual Conference and Trade Expo to be held in February, next year at Palm
Springs, California.
He will be honoured along with other winners during the Awards of Environment
Excellence ceremony and receive a plaque. He will also be expected to showcase
his accomplishments, where he will describe the Uma Oya project.
The IECA serves as a global resource for people who share a common responsibility
for the preservation and control of erosion.
Mr. Makadawara has been a tireless worker in erosion control in the
Uma Oya catchment area and richly deserves this international honour.
