The South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) regional headquarters was officially inaugurated in Colombo yesterday (21st).
The new headquarters is said to create environmentally friendly innovations that enhance and strengthen the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The building was constructed in Sri Lanka using World Bank financing support under the Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia project. Constructed in accordance with international green building standards the SACEP headquarters evidences a strong commitment to long-term development.
Occupying a 1,610 square meter plot of land, the new regional headquarters will be the center of the combined environmental action of member states of SACEP. The building has also been designed to attain Gold Certification under Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) a world-accredited benchmark of sustainable design and building.
Most significantly, the building features energy-efficient offices, solar panels that account for about 20% of its overall energy requirement and accessible sustainable infrastructure indicating its green-sensitive nature.
