Sri Lanka marks seventh anniversary of Easter Sunday attacks

News

Today marks seven years since the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks. Events have been organised at churches throughout the island to commemorate the tragedy, honour the victims and call for justice.

Bells were rung at churches throughout the country at 8.45 am, when the first attack occurred, followed by a two-minute silence.

The main commemorative event this year was held this morning at St. Anthony's Shrine, Kochchikade, which was one of the churches targeted in the terror attacks. The event was presided over by Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith. Religious leaders from other faiths and foreign diplomats were among those in attendance.

A special service was also scheduled to be held at St. Sebastian's Church, Katuwapitiya.

In addition, a special prayer walk is due to commence at 4.00 pm today from Maris Stella College Grounds in Negombo with the participation of both clergy and lay devotees. The prayer walk will conclude at St. Sebastian's Church, Katuwapitiya.
