Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka's stalwart all-rounder and former captain, announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to one of the most distinguished careers in the island nation's cricketing history.

The 37-year-old made the announcement via post on his facebook page.

“After much reflection and discussion with my family, I have decided that the time has come to step away from international cricket,” Mathews wrote in an emotional message.

“It has been an incredible journey, and I am grateful for every moment I've spent wearing the Sri Lankan jersey.”

Mathews made his international debut in 2008 and quickly established himself as one of the most reliable players in the Sri Lankan setup.

Over his 17-year career, he represented his country in 118 Test matches, 226 One Day Internationals, and 90 Twenty20 Internationals.

His Test record stands as particularly impressive, with 8167 runs at an average of 44.62 including 16 centuries.

As a medium-pace bowler, he claimed 33 Test wickets, proving his value as a genuine all-rounder.

In ODI cricket, Mathews was even more prolific, accumulating 5196 runs with three centuries to his name.

His ability to anchor innings and accelerate when needed made him a cornerstone of Sri Lanka's middle order for over a decade.

Mathews captained Sri Lanka across all formats, leading the team through some challenging periods in the nation's cricket history.

His leadership during the 2014-2017 period was marked by his determination to rebuild the team following the retirement of several legendary players.

“The first Test match against Bangladesh in June will be my last red-ball appearance for my country,” he said.

“Whilst I bid adieu to the Test format, as discussed with selectors I will remain available for selection for the white ball formats, if and when my country needs me”.

Among Mathews' most memorable performances was his match-winning knock of 160 against England at Headingley in 2014, which helped Sri Lanka secure a famous victory.

His consistent performances in home conditions and his ability to rise to the occasion in crucial matches made him a fan favourite.

While retiring from international cricket, Mathews indicated he would continue playing domestic cricket and expressed interest in coaching and mentoring young players.

“Cricket has given me everything, and now I want to give back to the game,” he said.

“I hope to work with young cricketers and help them achieve their dreams, just as I was helped by senior players when I started my journey.”

The retirement of Angelo Mathews marks the end of an era for Sri Lankan cricket, closing the chapter on a career that embodied resilience, skill, and unwavering commitment to the national cause.

His contributions will undoubtedly be remembered as integral to the rich tapestry of Sri Lankan cricket history.
