Golf started on Galle Face Green

The British legacy that caught root in Ceylon over a century ago is gathering tremendous consumer demand and at the moment lavish plans are on the boards to attract the massive floating traffic of golfers seeking new locations and pastures. The early history of Golf in Ceylon - Sri Lanka - is fascinating and when we speak or refer to golf, attention is drawn to the Royal Colombo Golf Club, one of the oldest Golf Clubs outside the United Kingdom. The oldest is the Royal Calcutta Golf Club intitiated 50 years before the Colombo one.

The Galle Face Green which spread up to Elephant House enveloping the complete Army Headquarters alongside the stretch of the Lake and moving up to the Intercontinental & Galadari Hotel area and much more was the playing area for most sports and a part of this area became the birth place, cradle and nursery of golf and the inauguration of the Colombo Golf Club. Golf dominated the crowded Galle Face scene for many years but with continuous infringements, poaching and encroaching the Club was forced to seek new pastures and leave the Galle Face for other sports that needed smaller areas. Cricket took over this area and history has it that the Colombo Colts Cricket Club was inaugurated in a part of this area in 1873 alongside Horse Racing which was gaining tremendous popularity.

Model Farm

The new home for Golf came to be the property of famous philanthropist Sir Charles Henry de Soysa, the grandfather of elegant Golfer and Cricketer Ryle De Soysa. This land in Model Farm Road, 200 acres in extent was originally gifted to the Government for an agricultural project which fortunately for golf did not take off. At this point of time the heirachy of the Colombo Golf Club spotted this unutilised massive area and made an appeal to the Government which was scrutinised by the Governor Sir Joseph West Ridgeway. The Governor who was an enthusiast himself happily acceded to the request and construction started almost immediately and when the Course was ready Sir Joseph West Ridgeway was the Chief Guest at the opening ceremony off the first tee. He was requested to play the first tee shot which he accomplished in style but with embarrassing results. His shot carpet drove 5 yards and stopped dead. His good humoured response was "I hope nobody will ever play a shot like this on this Course". Soon afterwards the Club received Royal Charter and took the name Royal Colombo Golf Club and now after 122 years is shaping into a magnificent Course with an absolutely posh Clubhouse comparable or better than the best in our part of the world.

Victoria Golf Club

The popularity of golf was widespread and the need for more playing opportunities was becoming evident and records tell us that a new Club was instituted and named Victoria Golf Club following a spirited effort by W. Somerville who was the founder of Somerville & Co. Ltd., the famous Tea Traders.

European preserve

The Royal Colombo Golf Club and the Victoria Golf Club became the preserve of the Europeans with a sprinkling of Ceylonese. Inevitably the thought of golf among the Ceylonese started to raise its head. Havelock Park was the first venue in 1901 but the area and location was totally unsatisfactory and inadequate. At this time surfaced M.L.M. Ismail the great pioneer. He invited a small group of close firends and enthusiasts to his residence and there proposed the inauguaration of a membership club carrying the name Havelock Golf Club. Ismail created history and a world record by becoming the first Champion of the Club without playing a single match as all his opponents gave him walk overs. Such was the graciousness and good humour of the golfing fraternity of the good old days. Ismail was unanimously elected inaugural President of the Club over massive celebrations with Scotland's best when they came to their new home at Bullers Road, Colombo 7.

B.M.I.C.H.

In the year 1964 good fortne turned against the Club and its enthusiasts. The Government took over the property to adorn the location with the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall.

So ended the Havelock Golf Club which caused a massive exodus to the Royal Colombo Golf Club.

Nuwara Eliya

The hill country Golf Club was inaugurated in 1889 in picturesque surroundings in a salubrious climate located in a valley between hills that rise to 8000ft. Extremely popular among the tea planters the game prospered bringing much relief in social life to the community in the hill country. It is noteworthy to record that though golf was played in Colombo for many years the first Amateur National Title Championship was played in Nuwara Eliya in 1891.

Golf today

The golfing scene is strongly entrenched in Colombo and Nuwara Eliya with Digana and Pelwatte coming in to further spread the popularity of the game. Digana, off Kandy, is absolutely beautiful and picturesque.

An International standard course designed by Donald Steele and Martin Ebert is compared with any of the best on the International scene. Pelwatte recently encouraged by the President came up soon but 4 Courses in all are inadequate to match with the increasing demands of the anticipated floating population of addicts. Remember Golf swells the coffers of the Tourist Industry and more Travel Agents and Tour Operators must get on this lively bandwagon and capture this lucrative high spending traffic. Hans Henk, a smart and successful Golfing Tour Operator is there already and he has been beaming with his plate pretty full. By Tita.

Dilmini 'blocks' for the last time in TT

There was no Hamlet-like indecision and debate. No to-be or not-to-be situation, some sportsmen and sportswomen overstay their welcome - quitting the scene when you are at, or near, the peak of your abilities is something quite a few don't do. Getting the timing right is of the essence.

In the case of the two time National Women's Table Tennis champion Dilmini Direckze, she has got it first about right. A trained teacher of English who is presently imparting her knowledge of the language (and of TT) to the wide-eyed kids of Poramadulla Central in Hanguranketa, Dilmini has decided to call it a day. Her reason for arriving at this decision is indeed compelling. Being out on a limb as it were in far off Hanguranketa, she has not much inclination and far less time to indulge in her favourite sport. There is no one of remotely comparable standard in the school to make her practice sessions interesting and worthwhile. Weekend practices in Kandy are a different matter. Yet they are wholly insufficient for Dilmini to remain at the top of her game. She realises she's not getting any younger and does not want to stand in the way of an aspiring youngster. The fact that the present national champion, Kalpani Herath, is exactly half her age is a pointer in this direction.

Dilmini was a talent that flowered late - she didn't make much headway as a player till the Under-17 stage. She, along with others such as Upuli Mendis, Sheevani Warnakulasuriya, Premanjani Sivanathan and Savika Atapattu kept their Alma Mater (Girls High School Kandy) in the very forefront of Women's Table Tennis in the late eighties and early nineties.

Dilmini has taken in many countries in the course of her sporting peregrinations. The world championships in China (1994) and Malaysia (2000) were two such occasions. She represented the country on three occasions at the Commonwealth Games. An outstanding performance in the mixed doubles event, in tandem with Tilina Piyadasa, at the SAF Games in Kathmandu constitutes one of her main triumphs. A bronze medal in the team event is also a much-cherished souvenir.

It may have been over a decade ago, but a win over India's then national champion Rinku Gupta at an invitation meet in India ranks as one of her greatest triumphs. Aubrey Kuruppu

The Cricket Board should be elected or selected

by Rohan Jayetilleke

The Board of Cricket Control or any other game should conduct its proceedings according to the Sections of the Sports Law passed by the Parliament. No Board could function on a constitution of their own ultra vires these sections. What is surfacing now is that the Sri Lanka Cricket Board had its own constitution not framed to meet with the requirements of the Sports Law. Even at this late stage the Secretary to the Ministry of Sports should examine the constitutions of the different Sports Boards and satisfy himself that these constitutions are not in conflict with the stipulations and requirements of the Sports Law.

The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka is now a foreign exchange earner through sponsorship and television coverage packages, and further as witnessed during the recently concluded Cricket Series with England has a further dimension of promoting tourism. Therefore the cricket Board has to be composed of officials, with proven career records both in the game and administration and management of same as a corporate body.

These objectives cannot be ever reached by electing the Board through a process of elections. Those with the best of credentials would never opt to face elections, as elections are won only by those who can wield many things other than their own competence. Even in trade unions, elections are decided by certain vested interest groups who are keen to install in power those whom they can manipulate. Except in professional bodies, elections do not bring the best among the rank and file. Therefore, Sri Lankan Sports Ministry too must be pragmatic and accept the fact that the system of election to the Cricket Board should necessarily be refashioned and remoulded so that the most competent are entrusted with the control and promotion of the game.

The best solution is to treat the cricket Board as a Statutory Body, like government Corporations and Authorities and a Chairman and a Board nominated by the Minister of Sports and appointed with the authority of the Parliament as is being done in respect of office bearers of Statutory Bodies. In order to maintain transparency an financial accountability the accountants should be from the Government Accountant's Service and the entire accounts systems like in a statutory body or a government Department brought under the Auditor General.

Its wake up call for All..

By Bernie Wijesekera

This wonderful game called cricket which is being played here since colonial days has won worldwide fame due to some individual brilliant performances by the players at home and abroad. In 1996 the Lankan team climbed the Everest winning the World Cup final defeating Australia, in Lahore.

But sad to mention at present the game has lost its rhythm and consistency. Sri Lanka has won an odd one day series at home and abroad. But the best effort was last year in Pakistan, when the Lankans won the test series 2-1 and the one-dayers 3-0 whitewash.

Since then the game has not made much headway. This attributes to lack of proper planning for the future, due to power politics in the administration.

Sri Lanka a little tear-drop island at present is torn apart with political problems. There is no proper structure to support the game to reach higher levels. Ad hoc decisions is not the remedy to put it on course, for a smooth run. There should be co-ordination all round, with an objective to reach greater heights. The players, too don't know where they stand. In its wake apparently indiscipline among some of them, especially whilst on tour.

The present Interim Committee has decided to send two officials on overseas tours and make their own observations.

Unlike in other countries, here the tour managers keep on changing like musical chairs. As a result the players, too are made to grope in the dark, not knowing who will be the next manager. This in turn also contributes much for indisicpline.

In other countries any misconduct on the part of a player is made public and is a deterrent to others. Lets forget about the past and heal the old wounds with a collective effort to uplift the game's sagging morale.

It's wake-up call for all - be it administrators and those who are playing cricket to play for the right reasons and to look for the future of the game, rather than their own needs. Which is one of the reasons, why there has been a downfall in recent times.

This was even mentioned by the present Aussie captain Steve Waugh. He made it after hearing the passing away of Sir Don Bradman, whilst on tour in India early this year.

This is an ideal antidote for our power hungry officials, who are hell bent to hold office in some sport bodies - even by canvassing votes. To overcome this malady Sri Lanka cricket needs a strong management with professional skills.

The present Minister of Sports Lakshman Kiriella, - a lawyer by profession has the tolerance and patience to put it right. He once told the Sunday Times, "I am watching. But I don't want to rock the boat at once. Justice delayed means justice denied." Finally he got his act together, by dissolving the Cricket board and appointed an Iterim Committee, headed by Vijaya Malalasekera to administer until he puts the house in order.

In some quarters they were taken aback over the appointment including some journalists. Is he a contemporary of the Minister's old school they asked. Even questioning whether he has played cricket. He played with distinction for the Reid Avenue school later for Cambridge. A lawyer and a senior administrator in a leading firm. Minister Kiriella said it was a good choice - three-in-one. Its a shame if some quarters, try to spotlight the school tie. Already the country is bleeding with ethnicity. From whatever corner give preference to the man capable of doing the job sans petty politics. This is what Minister Kiriella is striving to even do sans prejudices for Sri Lanka sports to make an impact in the international scene.

Before long the sports law will be ameded to bring about fairplay and equality in the voting system. There are many clubs, who are not active and promoting the game or indulging in competitive cricket. But still have the voting right. It isn't cricket the Minister added. This has to be changed in fairness to the clubs, who are active and promoting the game. This leads to abuses. People with standing and those is experience who have played the game at highest level will be sidelined and the game suffers as a result.

To overcome this there should be two separate bodies - for administration and to handle finances. The latter is the main cause for most of the ongoing problems. "My ministry is transparent. I have nothing to hide. Everything will be made public. The media has the right to spotlight shortcomings. Let's play the game in the correct spirit on and off the field for all to live in peace and harmony". His aim is to put the country before self.

He is assured of support all round. Former Sri Lanka and Police S.C.'s ace rugby centre three quarter, Abdul Majeed who is now an M.P. is among them. Majeed told the Sunday Times, that he will give the Sports Minister all support in his endeavour to put Sri Lanka sport on the correct track. Former vice-president of the BCCSL Daham Wimalasena, too is now an M.P. He has already submitted some amendments to the Sports Law to the Minister, which appeared in the Sunday Times.

NSC specifies shortcomings in selection of Tennis players

The National Sports Council, has in their report about the non selection of N.S. Nishendran for the boys Under-14 team that represented Sri Lanka at the World Junior Championships concluded last Sunday at the National Tennis Centre Courts at Green Path, has specified certain shortcomings in the selection process to the Ministry of Sports.

This was disclosed to The Sunday Times by a senior official of the Sports Ministry that the NOC wants in future trials be held for the selection of the doubles partners as well.

Taking into consideration, that there was no time to conduct special trials for the selection of the doubles pair, will not be tolerated for future selections, for which the Minister himself admits that selections for any team to represent Sri Lanka should be picked by conducting trials.

Meanwhile Nishendran did well playing in an Indian tournament the Embassy ATTA Sub Junior ranking championships concluded at the Sadhashivanagar Club Courts in Bangalore.

He beat the top seed in the championships Dhruv Sandar in the Boys Under-14 singles 6/1, 7/5, and continued his winning sequences downing the sixth seed in the Boys Under-14 semi- final Gaurav Sundar 6/0, 6/3.

Acid test for Warne

SYDNEY, (AFP) - For the best part of eight years Shane Warne has tormented England's batsmen but nagging fitness worries may make the tormentor the tormented in this year's Ashes series.

Statistics back the claim that Warne is the greatest legspinner in the history of Test cricket.

In 87 Tests he has been Australia's highest wicket-taker with 376 at an average of 26.62. But his figures against England underline his supremacy.

In 18 matches he has snared 87 wickets at 24.28, including one ten-wicket match haul and four five-wickets in an innings.

Sami strikes early blow for Pakistan

By Andrew Gidley

CANTERBURY, England, May 12 (Reuters) - Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Sami took two early wickets but Kent battled back to reach 115-2 at lunch on the first day of a three-day tour match on Saturday.

After the tourists had won the toss and put Kent, captained by Min Patel, in to bat, Sami snapped up the wickets of David Fulton and Ed Smith inside the first four overs.

Opener Fulton was caught at short leg by Saleem Elahi for three, with the score on nine. In his next over Sami bowled Smith without further addition to the score.

Kent, weakened by the absence of injured skipper Matthew Fleming, vice captain Mark Ealham and new overseas man Darryl Cullinan, recovered with Robert Key and Matthew Walker sharing an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 106.

The century stand came off 151 balls, Key hitting seven boundaries in his 48 not out, while Walker reached the ropes six times in his unbeaten 49.

Sami, despite his early successes, incurred the wrath of umpire David Shepherd, who gave him an official warning for running on the pitch.

The bowler also had problems with his run-up, over-stepping 10 times in two spells.

Pakistan captain Inzamamn-ul-Haq used five bowlers with spinners Mushtaq Ahmed and Saqlain Mushtaq both given a couple of overs just before lunch.

The tourists were not at full strength for the match with Waqar Younis having a precautionary check-up in hospital after waking up with a sore throat, while Shoaib Akhtar was also left out.

Kumble, who missed the recent three-Test home series against Steve Waugh's Australians, said it would be a bonus if he could regain fitness before the Sri Lankan tour, starting in July.

"If I recover before the Sri Lankan tour, that'll be a bonus," said Kumble, the second-highest Indian wicket-taker with 276 victims in 61 Tests after Kapil Dev (434 wickets in 131 Tests)."
