Helping retain an ancient tradition

Traditional craftsmen of wooden masks are facing difficulties obtaining the “kadura” timber (yellow oleander) that is used for carving the traditional devil masks. The timber is becoming a rare commodity because it is not grown widely. Pictures show a traditional craftsman working on a mask while a woman paints one. Pix by Dinuka Liyanawatte.
