Liquor ban
not for political supporters?
An Excise Department official was injured in an
attack allegedly by an UPFA Provincial Councillor when the officer
attempted to arrest a person selling liquor during the week-long
ban coinciding with the Vesak and the 2550 Buddha Jayanthi anniversary
celebrations.
Moneragala Excise Division OIC Fazal Mohamed was
assaulted on Friday night when his team sent a decoy to arrest a
person selling liquor. They had purchased a bottle of liquor at
Rs. 650 and were attempting to take the person to the Welimada Police
when Provincial Councillor S.A.D. Bandusena had allegedly assaulted
the team. He had argued that the Excise officials had no authority
to arrest his party supporters, despite the ban.
The arrested suspect was allegedly taken away
by the PC member.
The injured officer was admitted to the Moneragala
Hospital. A complaint was lodged with the Welimada Police, but no
arrest had been made till last evening.
