Massive security ops for Randoli Perahera

Police seek public cooperation for effective safety

By Shane Seneviratne

A special security plan will be in operation in Kandy for the Esala Maha Perahera with more than 7,000 policemen on duty. Tight security measures are already in force to prevent possible terrorist attacks as well as crime during the Randoli Perehera when thousands of people from all over the country flock to Kandy.

Stringent security measures are being enforced after sunset in the Kandy police area, which would continue well after the Perahera ends, Kandy Police said. They request the public who come to view the Perahera to cooperate with them so that security lapses of any sort would not occur.

Police personnel deployed in and around the Sri Dalada Maligawa to provide security for the Randoli Perahera.

Residents in the area have been asked to keep the police informed if they have visitors staying in their homes so that they would be able to keep a tab on suspicious persons who may frequent the neighbourhood.

Police said they would not hesitate to take legal action against anyone who fail to notify them of any outsiders staying with them without Police permission. Police have already initiated legal action against such errant chief occupants.

The huge police force numbering around 7,000 have already taken their positions in and around Kandy, specially lining the daily Perahera route. With the onset of the Randoli, 2,000 more policemen would be deployed to carry out random security checks.

The IDs of all those flocking to the town to view the Perahera will be checked and any suspicious persons would be immediately arrested, Police said and requested viewers not to bring bags and baggage which might arouse suspicion.

The Municipal authorities in the meantime, requested Perahera viewers not to bring polythene bags as they would spoil the environment and pollute the area around the lake.
