‘Sathara Ima Gini’: A lesson to parents
Sathara Ima Gini' directed by Gamini Rathnasiri
is a miniplay that has a strong message for parents and children.
It is telecast every Monday at 9.30 pm on the Rupavahini.
Screenplay written by Rasika Suraweera Arachchi,
the story concept, art direction and production is by Dr. Dayan
Jayatilake.
The cast comprising children and some veterans
are Kasun Chamara Kumanayake, Vidushi Uththara Liyanage, Dilini
Rangana Liyanage, Umanga Nirmal Karunaratne, Nihal Fernando, Kusum
Renu, Neil Alles, Malkanthie Jayasinghe, Hyacinth Wijeratne, Janak
Premalal, Ravindra Yasas, Nethali Nanayakkara, Terry Jayasinghe,
Palitha Lokupothagama, Gamini Jayalath and Nella Samanthi.
Bimsara and Mihira are two clever young boys studying
in the same class. Bimsara comes from an affluent background while
Mihira son of a bus conductor is from middle class. Attending to
his studies well Mihira enjoys his childhood where as Bimsara is
pressurised by his mother, Janitha who is very strict on his education.
Brought up in an enclosed background Bimsara is not exposed to other
children in his village and is not allowed attend to any extraordinary
activity. On contrary Mihira as well as his sister Malithi are brought
up with parental love and care.
Having successfully passed the ordinary level
examination, the two boys prepare for their advanced level. Bimsara's
mother who is keen on admitting her son to a leading school gets
him admitted to a school in the town. She also finds various extra
tuition classes for him. Her aim is to get her son distinction passes
for all the subjects. Yet Bimsara who comes to town gets trapped
in its rush. Meanwhile Bimsara's father, Alwis who is involved in
both politics and business gives up the former. This is because
that he thinks that politics is not suitable for him. At this stage
regular quarrels starts between the parents and Bimsara becomes
a victim. It was only his grandmother and the servant, Kotapola
brings some relief to him.
Having completed Advanced Level Bimsara and Mihira
receive results. Mihira passes the exams while Bimsara comes down.
Having seen the exam results, Bimsara becomes a different person.
When his parents realises the pressure that Bimsara
a clever student had undergone a mental trauma they realise their
mistake.
It is too late when they realise that a child
need both protective love and freedom in set parameters. Filmed
