City turns motorists’ nightmare

Colombo has been experiencing some of the heaviest traffic blocks for the past few days due to factors ranging from bad weather to security measures.

On Friday, traffic blocks prevailed for three hours with police taking security measures to facilitate President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s visit to the BMICH to attend a ceremony. On Thursday, people were forced to get off buses and walk to Fort due to security checks.

According to Colombo’s Traffic Police Chief G. M. Lafir, security measures, the adverse weather, floods, poor roads and traffic lights failures are some of the factors contributing to the traffic congestion. “Heavy rains and flooded roads have caused the motorists to drive slower than usual, causing traffic jams,” SSP Lafir said.
