Rock’s charges: Govt. waits for Radhika’s response

By Ayesha R. Rafiq

The Government is awaiting a response to its request to the United Nations Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy, to furnish it with strong and credible evidence corroborating Ambassador Allan Rock’s charges that sections of Government troops were helping the Karuna faction to recruit child soldiers to battle the LTTE, Human Rights and Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said.

Minister Samarasinghe said he wrote to Ms. Coomaraswamy last week and asked for evidence that special advisor to the UN Representative for Children and Armed Conflict Ambassador Rock was in possession of, so that the Government could confirm its veracity and then launch a full investigation into the matter.
