Threats on TNA MPs: House promises action

Deputy Speaker Geetanjana Gunawardena yesterday promised prompt action to enhance the security of TNA MPs after its Batticoloa district MP Tangeshwari Kadirgaman reported receiving a death threat on her phone last evening. Chief Government Whip Jeyaraj Fernandopulle who was informed of the threat told of the incident to the Deputy Speaker just before close of sessions yesterday and requested prompt action.

“Two MPs have been killed and we have to act before any more similar incidents take place,” he said. Mr. Gunawardena said he would discuss with the Speaker and act immediately. Mrs. Kadirgaman told The Sunday Times that she had received a call from an unidentified caller in Batticoloa asking her to stay away from the area and that she would be killed if she came there. All the Eastern Province TNA MPs wrote to the Speaker recently stating they had received threats asking them to resign from their Parliamentary seats or face death.
