Relaxing strokes

By Chandani Kirinde

A mother-daughter duo and a friend who began painting as a hobby have come together to present an exhibition at the Lionel Wendt next week.

The trio, Shiromi Karunaratne, Senali Kodituwakku and Subhani Gatemurutha, all students of Lateefa Ismail will display their paintings on December 1, 2 and 3.

“I find painting therapeutic and relaxing,” said Shiromi who began painting about five years ago and took part in exhibitions a couple of years ago along with a group of students of Lateefa Ismail’s art class. She paints both on oil on canvas as well as water colours and does mainly landscapes.

Her daughter Senali showed a talent for art from her school days at St. Bridget’s Convent and has won several art prizes at school. Now a mother of a four-year-old, Senali paints mainly to de-stress. “Painting de-stresses me. It is the time I have to myself and it is relaxing,” Senali said.

This is the first time she is exhibiting her paintings and Senali says she is a bit nervous. Senali also does pottery in her spare time and during a sojourn in the USA some years ago she was nominated for a scholastic arts award. Senali paints more figurers in vibrant colour and detail than landscapes.

Subhani too began painting a few years ago and holding a high-powered job as a financial manager, it helps her to relax. “It is a hobby for me and I enjoy it in my spare time,” says Subhani who paints landscapes and flowers depending on her mood.

All three painters are appreciative of the guidance and encouragement given by Ms. Ismail.
