World Cup Cricket in Hambantota

World Cup matches in Hambantota? Can this be a reality? This morning son of President Mahinda Rajapaksa – Namal will lay the foundation stone at the auspicious time of 8.39 a.m. of the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium at Duwawatte, Angunukolapelessa, Hambantota.

This international facility is earmarked to have 10 turf wickets with all modern equipment with modern dressing rooms with flood lights while the ICC will give technological assistance to Sri Lanka Cricket. The ground will also contain an electronic score board, and modem media box with 24 internet connections and TV monitors, and computer facilities.

According to SLC media manager Samantha Algama they are also hoping to play two World Cup matches which are allocated to Sri Lanka at this venue in 2011.

Besides the president’s son Namal, Sports Minister Non Cabinet Bandula Basnayake, president’s wife Shiranthi Rajapaksa, brothers Chamal and Basil Rajapaksa along with the President of Sri Lanka Cricket Jayantha Dharmadasa are also scheduled to attend the ceremony.
