Nalika’s doll story

Award-winning senior journalist Nalika Rajapakse who has proved her prowess with the pen, has now ventured into a new creative sphere making innovative stockinet dolls. Nalika recently launched her maiden doll exhibition and a colourful guide book on how to make such low-cost, dazzling dolls at the Atami International School premises at Wattala.

‘Today there are parents who spend a lot to buy expensive dolls for their children. But as a mother I realized that there are parents who suffer silently since they cannot afford to buy such dolls for their children. My intention of launching this book was to encourage parents to make their own dolls for their loving children at a low cost’ Nalika told TV Times.

‘This is a novel concept in our country. I have also obtained patent rights for this creation. Most of our mothers assume that imported toys are the best for our children, but I would like to remind them that anything made by them using environment-friendly material carries a lot of value.

One day I witnessed a tragic scene at a Super Market where a child was crying because her mother could not buy her a doll which was quite nice but apparently unaffordable for the woman. Finally, even the mother was in tears because she could not make her child happy. This inspired me to launch such a project.

‘Though I am basically known as a journalist I was creatively involved in skills like turning out little hand-made products from my younger days. Even today I spend some time to create something new. I hope that this book will be of some help to mothers like me who not only want to give their children just a toy but also want to wrap it with lots of love and affection’.

‘I have received several offers from Lankans living outside our country and I am focusing on fulfilling those orders. Any mother who loves to create these dolls at a low cost can easily follow my book tilted ‘Redi Bonikkan Sedeema’ or call me on 0714-234282 for any help’ said Nalika.
