Fierce fighting as troops launch operation in..
Hard on the heels of their victory at Toppigala in the East, security forces yesterday launched a military offensive in the Wanni to re-capture guerilla held areas. At the crack of dawn, troops broke out of their defended localities towards Tampanai and Periya Tampanai, east of the Madhu area, to advance forward. Ahead of this advance, from midnight artillery, multi barrel rockets and mortars were fired at rebel positions.
 
Independence Day-like ceremonies to mark .....

People have been asked to express "patriotic joy" when the President receives the Sannas Paper (scroll) from the Service Commanders at an Independence Square ceremony on Thursday to celebrate the recapture of Toppigala and the East from the LTTE. This is among the guidelines set out by the Government to State Institutions and Schools for the Thursday ceremonies which will be similar to Independence Day celebrations with a 21-gun salute and military parade.

It was a cluster bomb, not Kfir
A cluster bomb dropped by an Air Force MiG-27 attack aircraft disintegrated upon impact on the ground in Tiger guerrilla dominated Wanni prompting them to claim they had shot down a bomber. The claim was made by LTTE Military spokesman Irasiah Ilanthiriyan to the Tamilnet website. A report said: “A Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Kfir bomber.......
