Love affair with his mother tongue ADVERTISTMENTS
Launched on August 11, coinciding with the 107th birth anniversary of his father, Roots, Reflections and Reminiscences by Dr. Tissa Abeysekara is first a son’s tribute to his parents for the cultural legacy he inherited through their disparate yet diverse cultural contexts, and second, an artist’s expression of his own preoccupations with the cultural climate of his nation. ‘To my father who taught me to love the English Language and to my mother who taught me to love life itself’, ......

Dancing with the Buddha
What does an image of the Buddha have to do with a romantic comedy about a 1980s pop star who finds new love? Music and Lyrics, a Warner Bros production starring the hugely bankable talents of Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore is to all intents and purposes a feel-good romantic comedy. Released in February this year, the film with a PG_13 listing directed by Marc Lawrence drew mixed reviews from the critics but topped the UK box office. In North America, it had similar success, debuting at No. 4 and generating $19 million in its first week.

Towards the end of 1949, it was his turn to be allotted a ‘Government Bungalow” as they were then called. The family thus moved from Hendala where we were living in a rented house to Manning Town to start a new life in the city.

Perahera season
The great chronicle Mahawamsa records that King Kirthi Sri Meghawanna also known as Kithsiri Mewan, during his reign in Anuradhapura was informed by the Mahavihara bhikkhus that Prince Danta and Princess Hemamala had arrived at Meghagiri (Isurumuni) bringing with them the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. The King went to meet them and ordered that a special casket be made to place the Sacred Relic.
