Keeping afloat the oldest Anglers Club

The Ceylon Sea Anglers Club is the oldest recreational angling club in the country and along with some of the other clubs boasts of a long and distinguished heritage. Established in 1934, the club is located in the Trincomalee District and comprises a clubhouse with 15 guest rooms with all amenities. The club has two boats specially outfitted for fishing and available for hire.

The club house is surrounded by lush forests, situated in a sheltered bay off the main Kodiyar bay in Trincomalee.

Sadly, in more recent times, the Ceylon Sea Anglers Club has gone into decay and disrepair because of its location in one of the most beautiful, but troubled parts of the country. Many of the club’s members have ceased to patronize the club because of security concerns although those who do continue to go there know fully that the risk is overstated.

To maintain the clubhouse and guest accommodation at the picturesque Clappenberg Bay in China Bay, Trincomalee, the club has begun fishing competitions in the south-west coast and inshore fresh water lakes to promote the sport of angling. The sport of angling in Sri Lanka has gained popularity over many decades and the art of trolling has become popular with people of all ages from all walks of life. In the past, the club had representation from many anglers, ranging from those attached to diplomatic circles, professionals from business and commerce fields, students and also interest from the tourist industry.

The Ceylon Sea Anglers Club conducted a successful inaugural Madu Ganga Estuary Fishing Competition in October 2006, where a lady angler - Ms Samatha Seneviratne caught the winning fish - a 7kg Moddha. Second place was awarded to Gavon Jayasekera and third place to Murad Ismail. There was a tie for fourth place between Mrs Loni De Lanerolle and Dorian Gray.

The Club plans to conduct this event again in September at Maduganga Villa. Entries are open to members and guests. The theme this year would be "Sustainable Fishing" and participants would be disqualified if their catch falls below the minimum sanctioned size. A special prize would be awarded to all anglers who release their catch after weighing. For more details check www.ceylonseaanglers.com or contact tel:0777 331099 and 0777 896696.
