Bin Laden mocks US as weak in new video

Elusive al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden mocked the United States as “weak” and vowed to escalate fighting in Iraq in a new video, his first such appearance in nearly three years. The al-Qaeda leader discusses current events but issues no direct threats in the video, released on Friday. His appearance appears to be timed to mark the upcoming sixth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington.

 
Madeleine’s parents named as suspects

The mother and father of British toddler Madeleine McCann, who vanished while on holiday in Portugal, have both been named as formal suspects by police, their lawyer said today. When Gerry McCann emerged from a police station here in the early hours after nearly eight hours of questioning, advocate Carlos Pinto de Abreu said that both the doctors were now under suspicion.

The northern tip of the Bay of Bengal, home to tens of millions of people, faces a potential double whammy from an earthquake and tsunami, a scientist warned on Wednesday.
