Political Column
  Abortive coup against free media
  By Our Political Editor
There were firecrackers in parts of the country as news came, from the LTTE 'capital' of Kilinochchi that their political wing chief S.P. Tamilselvan had died in an aerial attack by the Sri Lanka Air Force. The Government itself, correctly, remained muted, except for some remarks attributed to Defence Secretary Lt. Col (Ret.) Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.....

SLAF regains its image with powerful strike
  By Iqbal Athas
Near crack of dawn Friday, a Kfir and a MiG-27, both ground attack aircraft, took to the skies from the Sri Lanka Air Force base at Katunayake. For nearly 15 minutes, they maintained an altitude of some 15,000 feet. As their target neared, they dropped altitude. At some 1,000 feet, they dived and dropped their lethal cargo of bombs.

Those of us with uncomfortably long memories may recall that the varied censorship regulations imposed by governments of both the United National Party and the Peoples Alliance in Sri Lanka's recent history possessed certain common elements. First, they were all phrased in unreasonably broad terms. Secondly, the thinly disguised excuse given for their enactment, almost without exception, was "irresponsible" media coverage of the war.

Diplomatic reovlt: Why US State Dept. officials resist.....
By Thalif Deen at the united nations
When career diplomats resist mandatory postings overseas fearing for their lives, then you know your country's foreign policy is in deep trouble. For most American diplomats, a challenging assignment these days is to serve in Iraq, where hatred towards the US runs sky high.

Why psy-ops and censorship cannot survive in IT age
  By J.S. Tissainayagam
This week saw the government imposing a ban to "print, publish, distribute or transmit" material pertaining to proposed military operations or arms procurements, and the "deployment of troops or personnel." But as suddenly as it was imposed so was the ban withdrawn.
