Scintillating dance
Music and dance lovers are in for a grand treat this November, as Elizabeth Moir School is set to take the stage once again with their explosive new production Breakin' Bars. A flamboyant mix of scintillating dance that will mesmerize the audience, Breakin' Bars follows hot on the heels of a string of successful productions by the school, such as Dazzle (2006) and Bring It On (2005).
Breakin' Bars is set in a juvenile prison where there is mounting hostility between the guards and the prisoners. The rival gangs in the prison along with the guards are used to depict and represent various genres of dance. The highlight of the show is undoubtedly going to be the exhilarating and captivating dance routines, which are predominantly hip-hop and street jazz. The talented cast is led by the very experienced Nathan Imboden and Zara Mathew who play the leaders of rival gangs.
Adding to the rivalry are accomplished soloists Mariam Luthufi and Melenie Daetwyler, who sing many popular songs including Arethra Franlin's "Chain of Fools" and "Shackles" by Mary Mary. The show also features thrilling break-dancing, with a touch of beat-boxing and rap. The rival gangs ultimately unite in a spectacular climax in the final dance off between the prisoners and the guards.
The production is directed and produced by Nathan Imboden and Zara Mathew, under the supervision of accomplished director, Aida Mansoor. The dynamic choreography is by professional Nuha Naseer, who was flown in from the Maldives especially for the show. The variety of dance items is likely to thrill and captivate all audiences and is an absolute must-see for dance enthusiasts!
Breakin' Bars goes on the boards at the Bishops College Auditorium on November 10 – 11, 2007. It is sponsored by Mobitel and the Media Sponsors are ETV and E FM.
