Issues over BOC GM’s post
Bank of Ceylon (BOC) General Manager (GM), B.A.C. Fernando is expected to receive his extension for another year in the most coveted post of the state giant in August when his tenure expires, according to top BOC officials.
“There were rumblings of discontent amongst other officials for this post, but the BOC board has approved his extension for another year,” a BOC official told The Sunday Times FT.
He said the next in line for the GM post is W.A. Nalani, Deputy GM of BOC, but the tradition has been to extend the post to the incumbent GM till he is 60 years, which is the retirement age. “Fernando is 57 years old and traditionally at BOC, a GM will be granted extension till he is 60 years old,” he explained. He further said the dissent was when another Deputy GM, who is in about the fifth position in order of rank was earmarked for the GM post by the previous BOC Chairman, Udaya Sri Kariyawasam.
R. Kalupahana, Secretary CBEU-BOC Branch vehemently denied allegations that they were backing this officer. “We have verbally communicated to Dr. P. B. Jayasundera, Treasury Secretary that if Fernando will not get his extension, Nalani who is the next in line should be appointed,” he pointed out. |
