Are you a hard core gamer? Do you feel the butterflies when you see an Xbox 360? Do you constantly picture yourself in a Baghdad like dessert city running around with an AK47 taking down the bad guys one by one?
Then head down to the BMICH on August 15 to 17 and you'll be in for a real treat.
A massive three day gaming tournament titled Sri Lanka Cyber Games 2008 being held at the BMICH this month will see gamers from all over the country outsmart each other to be the champions of local computer gaming – an interactive entertainment form that is gaining popularity among Sri Lankan youth at a rapid pace. This one of a kind event promises to be one that'll leave gamers, whether they're experienced or at beginner level, breathless and wanting more.
The tournament, the first of many more to come, is jointly organised by the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo and Gamer.LK (www.gamer.lk), an umbrella organization and a web based community for Sri Lankan gamers.
President of the Science Faculty Rotaract Club Varuna Wijesundera says this is the first event of its kind held in such a grand scale. "In Sri Lanka we have talent; lots of talent. But that talent is wasted at internet and gaming cafes. What we want to do is bring a competitive gaming atmosphere to this country and introduce international standards," he says.
Registration began on July 21 and so far around 150 would-be participants have registered themselves. Anyone can take part in the event. Registration requires just Rs.100/-.
The tournament will be held at the Committee Rooms D and E of the BMICH, ideal locations to hold an event of this nature. Participants will battle it out for the winning title from 10 am to 5 pm on all three days. But if you're not that big on gaming, but would still like to watch all the action, don't sweat. You can just go over, sit back and watch the show.
"Anyone can come to watch the event. There will be big screens showing the games taking place along with a mini gaming café," says Varuna.
The main sponsor for the event is Intel, while the broadband sponsor is Dialog Broadband and the partner sponsor C3 Labs. The PC sponsors are Neat, E-Globe and Asus, while Elements Cafe comes in as a sponsor as well.
Official electronic media sponsors for the event are Art TV and TNL Radio, while the print media sponsor will be The Sunday Times.
