India seemingly took the upper hand at the end of the third day’s play of the second test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium yesterday. The Indians after gaining a first innings lead of 37 runs at one stage looked as if they were about to run away with the game, but, two huge wickets in the dying stages -- that of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid levelled the playing field somewhat.
India ended the day at 200 for 4 with an overall lead of 237 runs with six wickets at hand. However this is the last recognized batting duo and they are yet to score.
Earlier Gautham Gambhir and first innings double centurion Virender Sehwag flayed the Lankan attack to post another good 90 runs for the first wicket with both batsmen scoring half centuries. This, also proved that the much feared wicket did not hold the promised terror that was expected off it. Finally it was experienced Vaas who broke the stand as Sehwag was caught in the covers by Dilshan after making a quick-fire 50 in just 52 balls. A while later Gambhir followed when he was deceived by a mystery ball that came in from Ajantha Mendis and was bowled for 74.
Tendulkar who needed another 132 runs when he came into the crease to equal West Indian Brian Lara's all time record of 11953 runs seemed to be settling down as he partnered Dravid in contributing 56 for the third wicket before losing his patience to a delivery by Vaas and in the process handing a catch to Mahela in the slips for a knock of 31 thus he needs another 96 more to reach the desired target in the series.
With India losing their third wicket at 200 this was followed with another disaster when a leg before decision of Dravid off the bowling of Muralitharan was reviewed to the third umpire which was confirmed and Dravid had to leave but not after showing his disappointment of the decision. With that the match was called off with 8.2 overs remaining and India having a lead of 237 runs with six wickets and two days play remaining.
Earlier in the day the Galle International Stadium which is known to be a spinner’s paradise was exploited by India's spin duo Harbahajan Singh and skipper Anil Kumble.
We are ready to make a game of it-Mahela
Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardena speaking at the post conference said “The match is now even and we are in the game. The wickets of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul were vital wickets that we were able to take in the latter part of the innings. Though the Indians are having a lead of 237 runs if we are able to take two early wickets in the morning session we would be able to put them under pressure.”
But he gave credit to spinner Harbhajan Singh for his effort of 6 for 102. This gave them the Indians the confidence. He emphasised that the team is prepared to face any pressure when the game resumes today morning. It is going to be crucial for the two teams, the attitude of the team is they are even to ready to face a challenge of a target of around 350 runs.
