Capsicum crop a political casualty

Pradeshiya Sabha member Mahindapala Sugath showing the damage caused to his crop.

Suspected pro-government supporters stormed a chena cultivation yesterday and destroyed a crop of capsicum chillies at Tambuttegama, in the Anuradhapura district, because the owner had supported a UNP rally in the area the previous day.

UNP spokesperson M. Rizwi told The Sunday Times that the chena was owned by a UNP Pradeshiya Sabha member, Mahindapala Sugath, who had helped set up a meeting that was attended by Sajith Premadasa.

According to Mr. Rizwi, thugs had threatened the owner with dire consequences if he went ahead in setting up the meeting. Several bushels of rice were stolen from the victim as well, he added.

Damage to the crops is estimated as being over Rs. 200,000, Mr. Rizwi said.
