Center stage

By Dinidu de Alwis

"A singer from the old school with nothing pompous about himself, humble to the applause but stamping his presence on stage with lovely tone, projection and craftsmanship" said Gratien Weeresinghe writing about Rohan de Lanerolle.

Rohan who started singing at the tender age of six, will be performing at the Lionel Wendt on September 13 at a Solo concert as a fundraiser for Young Women's Christian Association projects. Collaborating at the piano will be concert pianist and music director of Soul Sounds Soundarie David Rodrigo, with Niranjan de Silva on keyboards and Christo Prins on drums.

Talking about the experience so far, and predicting what to expect, Christo said "Working with Rohan is very nice, he's very talented and he knows exactly what he wants. He manages to bring out the best in us. From an audience's point of view, they can look forward to a great evening. Rohan in not only a musician, but has a great sense of humour, and he's a brilliant entertainer. This will be a great evening of entertainment."

The world renowned, award-winning choir the Revelation would be making a guest appearance at the performance. The Revelations is the 6th ranked male voice choir in the world, and the only choir from South Asia to have won the title "World Champion" twice.

Rohan's brother, Ishan de Lanerolle will also be appearing as a guest artist. Talking about the harmony which they have, Ishan said "Sometimes when we sing, we look in opposite directions, but still manage to breath together, drop notes together etc. This is probably a result of the two of us singing together for years." Ishan would be doing a couple of solo performances, and a couple of duets along with Rohan.

It will be a mix of spiritual, light classical, light pop and Neapolitan songs. The lineup would include pieces such as "The Holy City," "The Lord's Prayer," "Impossible Dream," "Wherever You Go," "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," "Silver Threads Among the Gold" and the couple of Sinhala songs. It's in essence the vibrant variation that the crowd would expect from his shows. As Niranjan puts it " Rohan is a great entertainer. He knows to get the equation right so that everyone in the crowd can enjoy themselves."

Rohan de Lanerolle in Concert will be taking place at the Lionel Wendt on September 13, from 7pm onwards. Tickets are priced at 1000/-, 750/- and 500/-. Tickets and box plan are now available at the Wendt. 89.5 Yes FM and Channel 1 MTV will be electronic media sponsors, while the print media sponsors for the event will be The Daily Mirror and The Sunday Times. Parking will be available at Women's International Hall premises. The proceeds will be directed towards charitable projects by the YWCA, including child abuse prevention projects, and HIV prevention programme for incarcerated persons.

In the words of the young talent Asitha Tennekoon, "Musically, one need not be a maestro to realize that Rohan is in possession of a rich, strong and resonant voice". And it's that young vibrant entertainer's voice which will take stage next Saturday at the Wendt.
