Police clinched the Holcim FA Cup in a tie breaker 6-5 after the game was deadlocked at one each at full time in the final against debutants to big time football Civil Security Forces played at Longdon Place yesterday.
The champions though fancied to win the finale did not have thing easy as their opponents put in a fine display and gave them a torrid time. With no scoring done in the first half the newcomers Civil Security Forces shocked the experienced Police who were having three national players in their side.
They drew first blood with a stunning goal in the third minute of the second half through forward Kelum Perera. They lacked the experience to defend the slender lead as Police using their experience began making sporadic moves with well timed passes which baffled the newcomers.
Police succeeded in their valiant attempt when in the 20th minute in a melee forward Pradeep Kumara managed to beat the defense and the goalie to make it one all. From there on it was Police who dominated the proceedings but without any success.
With referee Anura de Silva blowing the long whistle it was left for the two teams to fight out a tie breaker. Two decisive misses by the losers as against one by the champions proved futile as Dumith Shashika booted the winning shoot out. The winners received the Holcim Cup plus a cash reward of Rs. 250,000/- while the losers received a cash award of Rs.100,000/-. |
