Get to know all about corals

Exotic underwater photographs will be on display for schoolchildren and the public at the Photographic Exhibition and Awareness Programme to be held on October 15 and 16 at the Main Hall of Rahula College, Matara.

The programme will also include lectures on ‘Nature & Corals’, ‘Varieties of corals and adverse effects from humans’ and ‘Conservation of corals & replanting’ and a short documentary. Schoolchildren will be able to register to help out with conservation projects.

As 2008 is the International Year of Coral Reefs, the programme is organized by the Department of Oceanography & Marine Biology of the Ruhuna University in collaboration with the Sampath Bank, Matara branch which has taken on several such conservation projects in the area as part of its CSR initiative.
